IN WHAT LANGUAGE DO YOU SPEAK IN EUROPE?

Our comment Only what? Chocolate [?] the national assembly [?] in Strasbourg [?] Albanians on certain days through telecommunications. From there, specialists in demography, sociology, psychology, etc. come to know the Albanian public and take measures to place it as much as possible under the appropriate influence. Today, a majority of private foreign newspapers and radio stations, financed by the United States and the countries of developed Europe, which broadcast political, cultural, etc. material in Albanian, have taken their place and gathered here. Perhaps from a half-true perspective one could say that through them we are breathing in Europe. If we remember that before the 1990s only a few foreign stations could be followed in Albania, it seems that this is something new and quite positive. From this point of view, in reality we are a country integrated into the European Community of information and culture. Why, then, should we be concerned? Our concern arises from the way of communication. While we are in a Europe that speaks many languages, we tend to communicate with it in a single language, more precisely, in the language of day-to-day politics, or the language of propaganda. This is a harsh, blunt, often vulgar language, which replaces dialogue with labeling, argument with abuse, and thought with shouting. Can Europe recognize us through this language? Today, Tirana has become an open place for foreign news agencies. This is natural, but what is troubling is what message comes out from here. If only the noise of conflict, insults, labeling of the opponent, and the absence of democratic culture comes out of Tirana, then this is our exported portrait. This language does not honor us. It is not the language of European civilization, nor the language of national interest. We need to speak with Europe also in the language of culture, economy, education, law, science, work, and citizenship. Only in this way can we understand one another and be respected. Otherwise, we will remain only the voice of a Balkan noise that others hear, but do not take seriously. (Continued on page 2)

Success, on the path of the ideal of democratic socialism

The Eurosocialists at the Second Congress Today, Tirana welcomes the venue of the second congress of the Socialist Party of Albania, a political organization of democratic force, in movement and in activity, which, on this anniversary of its political maturity, presents itself before Albanians and the international public with a high sense of responsibility and the conscience of a reforming and national force. This congress is taking place at a time when Albanian society is going through major trials of transition, but also at a time when the seriousness of the political forces is being tested in order to build a state of law, a market economy and a functioning democracy. The Socialist Party comes to this congress with its opposition experience, with its social-democratic program and with the aspiration for European integration. For the Socialist Party this congress is an opportunity to strengthen its unity, to define more clearly its governing alternative and to increase communication with the broad layers of the people. It is also a moment to send a message of cooperation and civility to the entire Albanian political spectrum. In the many greetings that come to the congress from sister European parties, Albanians see not only interest, but also appreciation for the path followed by the Albanian socialists. This is a sign that the SP is strengthening its international position and is becoming a serious factor in the country's political life.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union concerned about the Nano case

Interview with the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union for “Koha Jonë” The clash between well-known international bodies for correcting behaviors and actions contrary to the norms of democracy in our country may have unpleasant consequences for Albanian politics. Referring to current developments, the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union has expressed concern about the handling of the Nano case and the consequences it may bring for Albania's relations with international institutions. According to the interview, the standards of the rule of law and respect for parliamentary rights are key elements for a democracy that aims at European integration. Any deviation from these standards creates reservations and damages the country's image. The article emphasizes that international reactions should not be seen as interference, but as a reflection of concern for the state of Albanian democracy. The Nano case is thus presented as a test of the seriousness of Albanian institutions. Do you think that any kind of restriction on pluralism and the opposition could have serious consequences for the country's integrative future.

The Correction Coalition and BBC

The leader of the Socialist Party, Mr. Fatos Nano, states that the structures of the Correction Coalition will present themselves in the upcoming elections with a clear opposition alternative. He emphasizes that international support for the democratization of the country is not lacking and that communication with foreign media, including the BBC, has helped make the Albanian political situation known. In his statements he underlines that the opposition has the duty to present not only dissent, but also a governing program. According to him, citizens need a realistic and credible alternative. He also criticizes attempts to present the political debate as a personal conflict, stressing that the problem is institutional and is linked to the rules of the democratic game.
